Designlabel Vij5 and Meike Meijer are proud to present the result of their collaboration with Peugeot in the‘Onyx’. The concept of the sports car is based on new techniques and materials and NewspaperWood is one of them! The material NewspaperWood literally returns newspapers to wood again, of which the paper was originally made. The layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree and therefore resemble the aesthetic of real wood. As basic material a local newspaper in Eindhoven is used, who supplies misprints and non-spread newspapers from yesterday as a local material source. NewspaperWood has been invented by the Dutch designer Mieke Meijer and developed together with and under license of the Dutch designlabel Vij5.
The Onyx’ futuristic interior design consists of a brave combination of the materials NewspaperWood, wool felt and carbon. Beyond its looks it hereby explores the application of new, primary materials to take efficiency even further. NewspaperWood has been applied on the dashboard, the w-shaped element around the two seatings and the door panels. The combination with wool felt results, especially for the car industry, in a rather special interior.
Besides a special use of materials the design contains innovative elements like the fuel gauge constructed from blown glass and copper exterior panels on the bodywork. As with the bodywork, the interior is frugal in its use of materials, resulting in a minimalist interior, in close proximity to the occupants. Onyx demonstrates it is possible to reconcile customer demands, with high performance and preservation of natural resources.
To work on a car is rather special for the Dutch designlabel Vij5 since their regular collection consists primarily of interior products and furniture elements in various materials. For this, Vij5 regularly seeks collaboration with other young designers to expand their collection. Mieke Meijer and Vij5 are already working together since 2007 in the development of their new material NewspaperWood. In 2011 they presented the first NewspaperWood collection during the international furniture fair Salone del Mobile in Milan. In cooperation with a group of young Dutch designers, the collection varied from jewellery to cabinets and several other interior objects, all in the exploration over the possibilities such a new material has to offer. In Milan the design team of Peugeot scouted the NewspaperWood material, resulting in a special project they have been working on in complete secrecy. In close cooperation with the Peugeot design team, Vij5 has developed the NewspaperWood even further. The specially developed techniques make it possible to actually apply the material as veneer onto double-curved surfaces, which opens up new possibilities for the future! At the moment there are several images spread over the internet and a 24 second teaser movie. The Onyx will be officially launched during the 2012 Paris Motor Show from September 29 to October 14 2012.
